Special Humanitarian Projects

In 2008-2009, the UFA Humanitarian Aid Program again worked with the Social Service Program to assist families with immigration, financial, insurance and employment issues. For the Education Program, we provided support for a student from Ukraine who successfully completed an intensive ESL Program in Florida. For the Health Care Program, we assisted with logistical and transportation issues for patients and their families who came to the United States for medical treatment. During the floods in southwestern Ukraine, we worked with the Ukraine Cabinet of Ministers to remove the red tape that was preventing U.S. humanitarian aid shipments from being distributed on a timely basis.

In addition, the Humanitarian Aid Program also continued with the Kharkiv Orphanage project.

Kharkiv Orphanage #3To date, the laundry project involving Orphanage #3 located at 44 Korchagintsiv Street in Kharkiv, Ukraine is incomplete. As reported last year, for years adoptive parents in the United States attempted to provide laundry equipment for the orphanage which was unable to do its own laundry. They sought the assistance of several charities but were unsuccessful. The major problem was that the building in which the equipment was to be placed was not utilized for years and required major renovations. Although the building was part of the orphanage when it was built by the city of Kharkiv, it was not titled to the orphanage. Before any repairs could begin, the orphanage needed to have title to the building.

The Ukrainian Federation of America assisted with the title transfer and helped coordinate the $20,000 renovations and power hook-up. We have been working with Life2Orphans, who raised the money for the project, and the Ukrainian Charitable Foundation “Humanitarian Initiatives” which pledged two commercial washers and dryers. We are awaiting word about the issuance of the use and occupancy permits and the delivery of the equipment. The funds raised by the families have been applied to the repair costs.
